Learning Crochet: Tall Fans Stitch

This stitch is called the tall fans stitch. I think it would be perfect for a blanket or a scarf.

The shell stitch used is as follows:
(2 dc, ch1, 2dc)

Mulitples of 5 + 3 so keep that in mind when making your piece larger.

For this example we’ll just make a repeat of the stitch 5 times. This means you’ll need to chain 25 plus 3 for a total of 28 stitches.

Row 1: 2dc in 5th chain from hook, ch1, 2dc in next ch, *skip 3 stitches, 2dc in next stitch, ch1, 2dc in next ch* repeat across until you get to the last 2 stitches, skip next stitch, dc in the last stitch.

Row 2: ch3, turn. work a shell in each ch1 space across, dc in top of turning chain 3. (see photo below)

Row 3: ch3, turn, now work into the shells from the previous row (ch1 space), *ch2, sc around the space of the last 2 rows, (see photos below), ch2, work another shell in the next shell (ch1 space)*repeat across, dc in the top of the turning chain 3

Row 4: ch3 and turn, work a shell in each of the shells across (ch1space), dc in the top of the turning chain 3.

Row 5: repeat row 4

The patterned stitch is now complete. Just repeat rows 3 – 5 until your piece is as long as you want. If you’d like this to be a scarf (it’s rather wide using an I hook & 4 ply worsted yarn) just repeat the pattern until your piece measures 60 inches long.

Once you are finished, with your piece you can single crochet the entire piece. In the very last row you can skip the ch1 space in between the shells so that the piece has an even edge. (otherwise it will look wavy)
