Why I Write?

Writing.
Why do I write?
I recall early days, writing in journals as my sisters watched their programs on television. I am the youngest of three so had little influence over the programs watched.
I enjoyed reading books as a girl so my imagination was not lacking.
I often created life scenarios for my characters that I wanted in my own life.
When I wanted to go to summer camp, take horseback riding lessons, or travel to faraway places I put pen to paper and it became a reality.
As years past my imagination became more guarded. As that part of me became more hidden a darkness surrounded me.

To deal with the darkness I started keeping a journal – dumping negative thoughts, fears, and insecurities onto paper.
It wasn’t all dark.
My teenage crushes and love for ‘Love’ birthed many romantic short stories. Soundtracks with love songs by Michael Bolton, Kenny G, Air Supply and Journey were frequent additions.
Hours of my youth were spent waiting for the perfect song to play on radio so that I could record it on tape and then transcribe the words. (I’m dating myself here)
A Pause
As darkness encroaches on me like anakin skywalker I fade away from writing. It is what I enjoy and the voices tell me I shouldn’t be happy.
Writing is put away in a corner perhaps to be taken up at a later time.
Marriage and Children
Once marriage and children entered my life is a long wild ride with very little rest stops along the way.
Writing did return – not the creative type – words birth memories of ‘mama’ ‘dada’ and “I love you’s” from little chubby lips.
Letters to sons about future dreams I have for them.
Apologies for rash behavior and sharp tongue.

Kimberly, I remember visiting your blog the other day. Such inspiration. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment – Yes, very therapeutic – beats stuffing myself with sweets all day.
I like your post Sara, I especially like the idea of dumping negative thoughts, fears, and insecurities onto paper. Cleanse the mind of these negative thoughts ! Keep up the good work…
Pete, that is one of the best ways to clear my head. It is kind of like brain washing but for the excessive thinker.
It’s so important to connect with your rationale about why you write especially when you’re unsure and feeling vulnerable about your writing abilities.
Dorit, so true. It is good to get it all out though – to see it in front of you. It helps to see that the fear is only as big as you make it.
Love this blog with the crochet all through it. Have always loved working with my hands, whether it be woodworking, cooking, painting, or handcrafts, love working with my hands creatively!
Looking forward to following your blog posts!
Jason, thanks for popping in. I like all crafts (including writing) and feel most fulfilled when I am creating. I don’t do woodworking but my husband is a picture framer and grew up around wood and art his entire life.
OMG! I love your blog!! Great article.
Tandy, I know my blog is probably way out of the norm for you but I just enjoyed your blog so much. Thanks for the return comment – I appreciate it. Helping people with Overwhelm is a great market to be in.
It’s lovely to get to know more about you and why you write, Sara. I write for a multitude of reasons and they’ve changed over the years, like you. Now, I mainly write because I have something to say and want to get it out there and to help put food on the table for my family.
Alexandria, I feel the same way. Having commented on your blog a few times this month I feel like I know you a bit more. Your tips today on how you manage more than one blog were helpful. Time management is key.
Hi Sara,
It’s been a long time since I sat down and wrote for the sake of creative writing, and not for money. Unfortunately, I no longer possess my creative journals.
I had moved around quite frequently when I was younger, before I was a mommy. It’s anyone’s guess where I left my journals. Most of my writing was random rambling. Sharing childhood thoughts that turned into adult fantasies.
I never had dreams of authoring a book. How about you?

Bonnie, my journals were my dreams and thoughts (insecurities) and sometimes poetry. Those first journals are no longer because I threw them away once I had children. I didn’t want them to accidentally read some of them as they were not all G rated.
Writing is a way to connect to our inner voice and allow ourselves to heal. Thanks for sharing your story!
