Sketching a Design Using Shapes and Freehand Drawing
Sketching out a design is fairly simple even for those without drawing skills. Crochet like drawing is simply a collection of shapes.
What shapes can you use?
- Rectangles become scarves, sleeves or blankets
- Circles become coasters, doilies, or bases
- Squares become purses, pillows or storage containers
- Spheres are heads, balls, or eyes
- Cylinders become bodies, jar covers, or leggings
Try mixing shapes to make your design. For example, 2 squares and 2 rectangles become a very basic sweater or a sphere and a couple of cylinders turn into a doll.
Sample Pattern Challenge: The Dishcloth
- Choose a stitch for your design
- Select your yarn and hook
- Make your gauge swatch
- How big will your dishcloth be?
- What edging will you use?
Don’t want to design a dishcloth? No problem. This challenge is for you. Create what inspires YOU.

How very clever to make your own pattern, I have only learnt to crochet squares that too to make ababy blanket.

Nayna, That’s how crochet caught me – I made a baby blanket for my youngest son back in 1999 – 14 years ago. Thanks for stopping by.

well you certainly have a lot of talent. Definitely more talent than I do. I think I can do a simple chain stitch, but that’s about all.

A chain stitch IS talent. That’s how I started. My mom taught me how to chain and I made a really long chain. You can actually make some pretty lovely accessories with just the chain. Thanks Mary for stopping by.
