What is the main income stream from crochet?
I try to do a little bit of everything… I design and sell my patterns in my blog eShop as well as on Etsy, Craftsy, and Ravelry. I also teach classes at a local yarn store. And I have more recently set up some advertising and affiliates on my blog as well.
Did you set out to make money with crochet or was it an afterthought?
I first started my blog as a hobby… a creative outlet and a way to socialize and share with others who had the same interests. But as I became more involved in the online crochet community I saw the opportunity to make it more and started investing my energy into building it into a business. I love the idea of spending my days working at what I love.
How do you market your business? (or blog)
I think my blog and pattern shop kind of market each other. I also try to keep connected with people on social media.
How long was it until you really saw your financial goals being met via your business/blog?
My financial goals change as my blog evolves. For the first year, my financial goal was just to cover the cost of my yarn and supplies. But more recently I have started to focus on ways to start compensating myself for the time it takes as well.
Any advice you would give to those just starting out?
Be true to yourself and your vision for your blog or business. Focus on what you love and are passionate about and it will show through in your work. Also try to get to know and be supportive of your fellow crafters and bloggers.
