Crochet Business Interview with CrochetAddictUK

Meet Susan Dougill

I started to crochet due to a medical condition (CFS) and ever since I’ve been a crochet addict! I love making things that make people smile. I have a fantastic 5-year old son who helps design some of the patterns (he is very particular about colors and types of eyes) but I have to watch out that he doesn’t end up with the finished products. 🙂 He only has 9 hats, 3 scarves, 1 cowl and I’m not even going to try and count his amigurumi.

I specialize in making Animal themed items such as hats, scarves, etc… I will make any animal to any size required. I design all my own items and I have also started selling my patterns.

What is the main income stream from crochet?

Products are the best seller.

Did you set out to make money with crochet or was it an afterthought?

It was definitely an afterthought. I started the blog in April 2011 and then decided to start selling things at the end of July. I only started selling items so that I could afford to buy more yarn to make more things. 🙂

When did you think “hey I can make a living doing this”?

The blog started in April 2011, I started selling in July, Sold first goal by August (only a small goal) 🙂

How do you market your business? (or blog)

Word of mouth, friends, school fair, Facebook Business, Facebook Group, Facebook postings, Twitter, Pinterest, Flickr, Etsy and Ravelry, Finished Objects Linky, Work in Progress Wednesday’s Linky, Fiber Arts Friday linky, Create Friday Linky.

Any advice you would give to those just starting out?

Join in sites that allow you to link on projects you’ve made, such as FO Fridays, WIP Wednesday’s, Fiber Arts Friday, and Creative Friday. Also, post on other people’s blogs that you find so that you get known in the crafty world.

I would also recommend anyone new to blogging to go to CrochetConcupiscence.com. That is where I found most of the blogs I now read and join with.

Giveaways are also a fantastic way to get known. On your giveaway stipulate that they have to be a follower of your blog to enter, say they can have another entry by blogging, tweeting, liking your business on Facebook or posting about the giveaway on Facebook. Make sure that they have to put the link to where they have posted.

It’s just a question of getting known.
