Easy Homespun Shawls- 3 Crochet Designs Review

In the summer of 2008 I crocheted my very first prayer shawl. It was for a snail mail swap I participated in. The challenge was to create something for my partner that represented peace.

I chose a prayer shawl so that I could pray peaceful thoughts into each stitch. I like to think that each time she wraps the shawl around her that she is being hugged by my prayers.

Crochet Prayer Shawl – Momwithahook 2007

Easy Homespun Shawls – 3 Crochet Designs is a collection by Lion Brand Yarns featuring their Homespun ® line. You can buy the PDF eBook for $4.99 on LeisureArts.com. (Paid referral)

Features:

  • 3 easy crochet patterns – Openwork Shawl, Shawlette, and Bloom Shawl
  • Openwork Shawl measures 18” x 60” [45.5cm x 152.5cm] not including edging,
  • Shawlette measures about 40” [101.5 cm]
  • Bloom Shawl measures 15” x 60” [38 x 152.5 cm]
  • Homespun bulky weight yarn along with a K-10.5 [6.5mm] hook makes these quick projects

All 3 designs use a large hook and bulky yarn so they work up quickly. For a quick gift these patterns will work. On average they take 2

– 3 hours to work up depending on how fast you work.

When I started my first shawl, the Openwork Shawl, I was a bit frustrated with the slipperiness of the yarn. Homespun also has little curly nodules which take some time to get used to.  The longer I worked with it the easier it became. I wouldn’t recommend this yarn to a beginner.

Additional bulky weight yarns that can be used as substitutes:

  • Woolease Chunky
  • Jiffy
  • Vanna’s Colors

Be sure to make a gauge swatch before you start your project if you decide to substitute yarn.

Take a look at Easy Homespun Shawls – 3 Designs on Amazon to see if this is a good collection for you. The ‘look inside’ option lets you see the first pattern as well as a small snippet of the other 2 designs.
