Today Nicole of Darn Good Yarn is stopping by to introduce you to her small business. I was introduced to her via Lorene of Cre8tion Crochet. I immediately connected with this company because it is a global action company. What do I mean by global action? Well, Nicole focuses on improving lives and the environment but let me let her explain. (P.S. Giveaway Alert at end of post)
Meet Nicole of Darn Good Yarn
My name is Nicole and Sara was super awesome to let me guest blog for today. Thanks Sara, you’re the bomb!
So, who’s this Nicole chick? Well, I’m the president of a passion-turned-business, Darn Good Yarn. I know, you might be thinking…. *yawn* another yarn company. But at Darn Good Yarn when you get our yarns you are providing jobs that help people out of severe poverty. Also by understanding that cheaper isn’t always better you are making sure that sweatshops cease and child labor is abolished. You also get higher quality yarn as a result!
Not only are you helping individuals in other countries you’re also supporting a US-based company. Like, our creative director Natasha, she works here but she also is helping her husband start-up an organic farm here in central Maine. And my executive officer runs her own crochet business too! So we’re three girls on a mission to bring you yarn with great vibes!
And this is why you should keep reading and why Darn Good Yarn isn’t another yarn brand. Simply put, I treat my business family just like I treat my own family.
What does this mean? To me, it means that I treat my suppliers, my customers and my employees like my family. Yup, it’s a lot of extra work but that’s how I feel business should be.
For example, I found out one of my spinners in India didn’t have enough money to pay for a surgery. So, I turned to my customers to help me fund it. Well, we funded it in three days (and people got yarn too—talk about getting some bang for your buck)!
She’s recovering wonderfully and she can get back to work to keep supporting her family. I know some of you reading this might be on the fence or maybe just starting your own business. There’s a lot to it (I get it! I’m also a micro-enterprise consultant too—in case you ever wanted to pick my brain). But, I can tell you that the one thing I’ve learned in business is that it’s better and easier if I just stay true to who I am and then let that ethos overflow into my business.
Yes, that means that some suppliers and even some customers aren’t always the right fit. But in the end it keeps my energy , love and passion in what defines me and Darn Good Yarn… beautiful fibers, helping people and not taking myself too seriously in any of it.
Want to hear more about my story? Well, leave your questions here and maybe I’ll get invited back to answer them for you!
Have a wonderful and blessed day!
xo,
Nicole
