Turn Your Simple Crochet Blog into Cash
Back in 2007 when I started my crochet blog (see momwithahook.com) it was not with the intention of making money. I just wanted a record of the crochet projects I was working on.
Slowly it turned toward featuring custom crochet work from my Etsy shop. More recently though I’m using alternative means to bring traffic and income to my blog. Specifically affiliate partners and EBook sales.
Blogging Rocks!
The great thing about blogging is that it is a platform open to anyone. There are a number of earning methods to choose from. Some are free and some require an investment. No matter how you decide to earn with your blog, know this – blogging is hard work and making money from it is equally as hard.
I Can’t Wait, Just Show Me the Moola Mama
Come on Sara, Can I Really Make Money Blogging About Crochet?
I’m not going to spit out hype just to get you to listen to me. No, you’ve been misled too often by ‘pie in the sky‘ sales letters that promise you financial freedom but only leave you and your wallet empty. There is no magic potion to take. The only way you will see income from your crochet blogging efforts is to use tried and true methods that have worked for real people.
Okay Sara, What Are You Selling Me?
You got me. I am a mom trying to earn an income for my family so YES I do sell things. I write Ebooks and I do a bit of ghostwriting on the side. I also use this blog to share products and services that will help you make money working from home. If you can do that and crochet too, well, that is all the better. 🙂
Crochet Blogging for Cash is Easy as 1 – 2 – 3 – 4
- Buy a Domain Name and Hosting {$12.00/yr + $5/mo = $72.00}
- Install WordPress.org software and set up your blog {free}
- Set up a mailing list and autoresponder {free – $20.00/mo}
- Choose your money maker {free}
But Sara, I Can’t Afford to Invest Any Money
Frankly I have to say that is bull fluffy. 🙂 Be honest with yourself. Do you really want to make money from home? Are you disciplined enough? Are you willing to work until it happens? What do you feel about budgeting?
Believe me, that was the mantra I told myself often. Remember, I’ve been doing this ‘stuff‘ for 12 years.
You know what? It was just fear in disguise. Kick it in the rear and if it still hangs around then just “do it afraid”. [This is something one of my favorite Bible teacher says often. Joyce Meyer.]
You will find that even on a low income or a fixed income that this is totally do-able. Step away from the fear and have faith in those who have gone before you. I know it is scary but trust me, it is worth it.
Get to Work
Now that you have the tools to start you can get to work. That work will involve writing a lot of content. That shouldn’t be a problem for you because you love crochet. Write about your latest project or about the super yummy wool you purchased at the fiber festival.
Get involved in an online crochet community like crochetville, crochet liberation front, hookey or crochet talk. You can find Yahoo groups, Facebook groups, Ning groups and Google plus Communities. Hooking up with others who crochet will give you plenty of topic ideas to cover on your blog.
After a few months you should have plenty of content to share which will drive traffic to your blog. Once your traffic is at a high enough rate you can consider monetizing your content.

Money can come to you in a number of ways. I know you’ve thought about selling your crochet items at craft fairs. You might also try selling it on your blog.
Have insanely awesome traffic? You can utilize ad networks like GoogleAdsense or BlogHer OR you can sell your own ad space.
You might even venture into affiliate partnerships. These are simply relationships with businesses who pay you a commission to recommend their product. A couple of ones that come to mind are Craftsy, Annie’s Attic and JoAnn’s.
You can even do what I do and sell your writing.
Whatever you choose be consistent. Don’t switch it up all the time. I’m saying this from personal experience. Keep your focus on the prize and you should see a steady flow of income.
Conclusion
With the right tools in place you will start to see a profit from your crochet blog. If you have free blog hosting I highly recommend purchasing your own space. Check out Blogelina’s free hosting for a year option if you are tight on cash.
Find support in the crochet and mom blogger community. If at all possible hook up with a business mentor like Laurie Wheeler of Crochet Liberations Front & Hookey OR Sedruola of YarnObsession. Both ladies have hearts for crochet business owners and will be thrilled to help you succeed.
You can do this. You don’t have to pay outrageous daycare bills while working your minimum wage job. You can crochet and make money at the same time. Believe in yourself and your skill – I Do. 🙂

Thanks for this post, Sara. I needed it. There were things that popped out at me (do it afraid) that I needed to see.
I have been wavering back and forth about doing a business online. Working from home is something that is what is best for me at this time and I have been so afraid to”fail”.
I am Christian and know God is with me always and gives us the desires of our heart, that FEAR has kept me stuck because I didn’t succeed before.
Today is my day to begin kicking fear in the butt.
Still don’t know what I am doing but I know that I will be lead.
Thanks again.
Maggie, that is by far one of my favorite quotes. “Do it Afraid”. I love listening to Joyce Meyer because she is like my little cheerleader. She brings out the fight in me. Fear cripples so many people.
The good thing is that You and I are doing it in our fear and not quitting.
