I went over crocheting in the round in a previous post but I wanted to touch on it again.
First I found a fabulous site that has a sphere calculator which gives you a perfectly mathematical sphere. This would be useful for toys and amigurumi or other patterns calling for balls.
Second, I’ve gathered some useful links for those new to crocheting a hat. Knowing how large to make your hat or which hook or stitch to use can be a bit daunting at first. Luckily, the crochet community is filled with love and is willing to share their knowledge.
Maggies Crochet has a great tutorial on how to make a double crochet hat. There is a video as well as a common hat size chart and a basic double crochet circle pattern which is useful for starting your hat.
Slugs on the Refrigerator has a whole short course on designing your own hat. She starts out with why she started creating her own hat patterns. She explains the math behind the creation of the hat so you will have a perfect hat for whomever you choose to give it to. Part one is making the circle (top of hat) and part 2 is adding the length.
Sometimes when working a hat or a circle you’ll be asked to make a magic circle. Here’s a visual of that process made by Curiously Cute. (it’s also a printable)
Tot Toppers did some research surveys and came up with a great hat size chart. She teaches the math behind hat sizing in knitting and also has a booklet “Math for Hats”. (inches and centimeters – From newborn to Adult large)
Epipa blog is a German blog but she has a great photo tutorial on how to crochet a ball. Just have Google translate it for you.
