The ability to fly opens the world to us. You can fly to Spain, Korea, The Bahamas or even commute from Los Angeles to San Francisco for work. Imagine not being able to get on a plane and head to India or China? The way we vacation or do global business would definitely be altered.

The History of Flight

In America we think of Lois and Clark as they are most famous for the first American flying machines.
Before the famous brothers China made the kite,Leonardo Da Vinci created the Ornithopter,  the next big improvement was the Hot Air Balloon and finally gliders came along in the late 1800’s.

Amelia Earhart is the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She’s also famous for disappearing in-flight.

Keith Green (Christian Music Artist) along with his children and a number of friends were killed as their plane came crashing down.

Why all this about flight? It segua’s quite nicely into my analogy between life and flying.

Flight is Exhilarating, Dangerous, and Freeing

Life is Flight.

Turbulence,

nausea,

bad food,

great destinations,

little bitty bottles of alcohol,

people who talk too much,

babies who don’t understand why they have to sit still for hours,

popping ears,

small, uncomfortable bathrooms,

circling and gliding,

dips and dives,

emergency landings,

crashes,

Teen Flight

Heart fluttering for the first time as I meet a boy for the first time

Oh he’s so cute

Did he just look at me?

OMG, he said hi

I guess this is what is meant by the phrase “on cloud nine”.

First actual flight

Plane to San Francisco to meet a college roommate.

Where is the gate? Will I miss the flight? Am I walking fast enough?

Grab hold of my bag – I’ve heard about people walking away with it – everyone is suspect.

Relief – found my seat, put my bag overhead, get a window, yippee!

Scared – ascending, a little shaky, holding on, will it fall? Will I get sick?

Landing – it’s over Hello my friend.

Young Adult Flight

Floating, oblivious to those around me, basking in the light of my first love.

Nothing can go wrong.

Everything is beautiful.

Everyone is love.

Saying ‘YES’ to whatever comes out of his mouth.

How is it that colors are brighter, sounds more lovely, and smells more intense?

No matter which station the radio is tuned to, love songs play.

I can’t get enough of ‘Benny and Joon’ and ‘Ever After’. (movies)

Dopamine, Serotonin, and Adrenaline all make up this silly little thing called love.

Blissful Flight

Holding my first born son, drug induced euphoria or is it just pure joy – a feeling unlike any other.

Beautiful. Toes, nose, chubby mouth, smile.

Even his farts are sweet.

Soft skin, eyes so blue, quizzical stares – all just melt my heart.

Mental Flight

Postpartum – what’s this?

Crying, sadness, numbness, rejection.

Hospital. Talk therapy. Drugs. Will this end?

Climbing out of a hole trying to find my wings again after a fight with depression.
Flight – Gliding – Fluttering – On Cloud Nine- Soaring – Ascending – Floating – Blissful – Climbing
Currently I’m transitioning to the ‘Empty Nest’ phase of my journey. Where I “fly” from here is unknown. The possibilities are  limitless.
