The Free Pattern Battle – Where Do YOU Stand?
I design patterns but mine are no where near the genius of Kim Guzman or Kat Godin. I don’t mind offering my patterns free for this very reason.
Sometimes though, I do charge for the pattern because it takes time to test it, to type it up, to convert to PDF and to photograph the sample.
Am I wrong for charging?
Hannahbelle of Handmade by Hannahbelle shares this:
Nothing is more gauche than posting that you’d like this pattern more if it was free, messaging the designer to ask for a free copy, or saying that the price is too high. If it’s not meeting your criteria, keep your mouth shut and move on. There are thousands of patterns out there. If you’re that much in love with it, buy it!
Need I say more?
Seriously though, lots of work goes into creating patterns. If someone provides free patterns as a hobby then most likely it will be free. BUT (see it’s a big but) if the designer is doing it as a means to feed her family and pay the bills “keep your mouth shut and move on”.
