Scars are wounds. They can be physical or emotional. It is rare that someone journey’s through this life without a scar or two.

Other scars aren’t so visible

Yelling – scar.

Ugly – scar.

Words – scar.

Healing

Physical scars heal over time. Your body is a wonderful piece of art. The emotions connected with these scars may last a life time. Do they have to? Is there a way to heal from emotional scars?

Dr. Patricia Price, a psychologist at the Wound Healing Research Unit, UK, suggests therapy to aid in healing the emotional scars.

Often times visible scars on the face or other exposed parts draw attention from others. This can damage your emotions, your self-confidence, and your ability to participate in life.

“Because of YOUR smile, you make LIFE more beautiful” Thich Nhat Hanh

Alexandra Heather Foss wrote “Finding Beauty in Your Scars” for the Tiny Buddha blog. She shares not about the details of her scar(s) but how she turned her scars into something beautiful – a smile.

She shares:

“I blamed myself for so long for things that weren’t my fault. Life stopped being beautiful to me, I stopped feeling beautiful inside, and my smile stopped shining beauty out into the world.”

“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing” ~ Mother Teresa

How many of us blame ourselves for scars inflicted upon us by others? (Hand raised high)

How many of us stop smiling – stop seeing the beauty in ourselves, in the world?

What changed for Alexandra?

A simple photo, a gift from a friend, a forest, the word ‘forgive’ packaged into gift from the universe to help her heal, to move her from the false self into the being she always was.

Lately, for my mental health, I visit Pinterest to find smiles and beautiful places. It reminds me that this world is still a glorious place and this life that I am living is worth it.

Try it. Type “smile” into the search bar on Pinterest and I dare you not to smile.
