A Pixie Hood-Hat Pattern in Tunisian Crochet

Note: This is an Intermediate Pattern

Step 1: Measure Your Head where you want the hat-hood to fit.

  • My head was 23 inches

Step 2: Choose your yarn and Hook size

  •  I used Red heart Super Saver in Turqua as it was what I had and a size M Tunisian hook

Step 3: Know Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss) & Tunisian Knit Stitch (tsk).

  •  Check YouTube (Crochet Geek aka Teresa)  or nextstitch.com.

Step 4: Make your starting chain.

  • Depending on your measurement in #1, chain about 3″ less [smaller hooks will need more chains and larger hooks will need less chains. Mine worked out to about 50 chains or 20 inches]

Step 5: Pick up stitches using the underside bump of your chain

Work Pickup stitches on underside ‘bump’

  • Continue until all stitches have been picked up. Do not count this as a row.

tunisian crochet – pick up stitches completed aka first pass

Step 6: Do a return pass (For a visual search Youtube “tunisian return pass“.)

Tunisian – Return Row aka stitches are off the hook

Step 7:  Pick up stitches in TSS & Return. Follow the Pattern Below.

  • Start counting your rows now. Remember in Tunisian crochet a pick up row plus a return pass row are equal to 1 row.

Step 8: Start Decreasing in the beginning and end of the pick up row.

  • You might want to review the process on next stitch or YouTube.
  • For additional help with tunisian crochet consider joining Tunisian Crochet on Yahoo.

Step 8b: Decide if you will make a hat or a hood.

  • Alternative 1: Hat – Sew match seams and sew up with matching yarn.
  • Alternative 2: HOOD – Follow the directions below.

Step 9: Sew up Hat or Follow the directions below for the Hood.

  • 9a: Starting at the top of the piece, sewn down the seam until you get to a nice snug fit for you.
  • 9b: You will now be Single crocheting around the piece so it will fit on your head. Join yarn to one end with a slip stitch , single crochet in this same stitch and in each stitch around HOOD
  • 9c: When you get to the middle where you just sewed up the ‘tail’ you will be working 2 decrease single crochets before the middle seam, single crochet in next 2 stitches, and then another 2 decrease single crochets. This will round out the back of your hood.
  • 9d: Continue single crochet around to the opposite end, chain one turn, single crochet back around, [Repeat the decrease over the middle seam] single crochet to the other each, chain 1 turn, Single crochet one more row this time without a Decrease [unless you still need to shape the back of the hood] and end off at the other side.
  • 9e: To make the ties, just slip stitch at one end, chain 50, slip stitch in each chain across. End off. [Repeat this with the other side]
  • 9f: Secure any loose ends you might have with a tapestry needle.

How Do You Make A Smaller Tunisian Crochet Pixie Hat?

To make a smaller hat work less chains onto your hook and/or use a smaller hook. I’ll be making another one so will make a child’s size for a future post.

A Note From Momwithahook:

I have not tested this pattern. Please if you attempt to make this let me know how you did. As time permits I will try to get a photo tutorial of the decreases as well as the sewing.
