Moira, a hubpages author, knows a lot about crocheting with plarn – the name given to plastic yarn. She has a number of great flower patterns that she makes using a variety of colorful plastic bags. You can check out the post I wrote about her here.
I tried making plarn and crocheting with it back in 2011. You can read about that experience and the tiny beach mat for a Barbie Doll I made from it in this post.
All you need to make plarn is plenty of plastic bags. Cut the bags into strips, join, and roll into a ball. There are many talented designers like Recycled Bags that make a living turning plastic into yarn.
Here’s a video tutorial on how to make plarn using the loop method to join the strips.
Many people choose to crochet their plarn into bags or rugs but you can also donate the plarn you make to people who use it for charity.
One charity I’m interested in contributing to Mats for the Homeless. You make this sleeping mats and they hand them out to people so they can have a comfortable (as comfortable as a mat on concrete exposed by the elements can get) place to sleep.
