A Pixie Hood-Hat Pattern in Tunisian Crochet
Chain
  1. Measure Your Head where you want the hat-hood to fit. [mine was 23"]
  2. Choose your yarn and Hook size [I used Red heart Super Saver in Turqua as it was what I had and a size M Tunisian hook]
  3. Know how to make a Tunisian Simple Stitch (tss) and a Tunisian Knit Stitch (tsk). [check you tube or nextstitch.com]
Stitches on hook [pick up row]
  4. Depending on your measurement in #1, chain about 3″ less [smaller hooks will need more chains and larger hooks will need less chains. Mine worked out to about 50 chains or 20"]
Stitches off hook [return pass row]
  5. For the first row of PickUp stitches you will be going into the underside bump [See picture below] Do not count this as a row. After you pick up your stitches, do a return pass. [*this is where knowing how to do a Tunisian Simple Stitch comes in*]

underside ‘bump’

Start Counting Your Rows at this point: [Remember in Tunisian a pick up row plus a return pass row are equal to ONE ROW.]

You should Now have something that looks like this:

Completed Hood-hat [not sewn]

Alternative to HOOD – Instead of working the HOOD below, just continue to sew down the seam and you have a hat.

Starting at the top of the piece, sewn down the seam until you get to a nice snug fit for you. You will now be Single crocheting around the piece that will fit on your head. [Note to self: sketch this out and scan in]

Join yarn to one end with a slip stitch , single crochet in this same stitch and in each stitch around HOOD - when you get to the middle where you just sewed up the ‘tail’ you will be working 2 decrease single crochets before the middle seam, single crochet in next 2 stitches, and then another 2 decrease single crochets. This will round out the back of your hood. [I will be adding pictures as I'll make a second sample for the PDF download of this tutorial]

Continue single crochet around to the opposite end, chain one turn, single crochet back around, [Repeat the decrease over the middle seam] single crochet to the other each, chain 1 turn, Single crochet one more row this time without a Decrease [unless you still need to shape the back of the hood] and end off at the other side.

To make the ties, just slip stitch at one end, chain 50, slip stitch in each chain across. End off. [Repeat this with the other side]

Secure any loose ends you might have with a tapestry needle.

To make a smaller hat work less chains onto your hook and/or use a smaller hook. I’ll be making another one so will make a child’s size for a future post.
