July 13: And the Winner is …

When it comes to choosing which social media platforms to focus on I just can’t choose a winner. I started on Facebook and then Google+ came along (which I like) but then the incident with Twitter happened so now I’m obsessing on the fact that I’m a spammer and that I should just lay off of Social Media for a while. Ugh – the anguish I put myself through.

You know that blogging is first about community. You’re building your little bubble around what interests your readers. A part of that community is interacting with your readers via social media. Many bloggers and businesses have Facebook fan pages and Google+ pages. Which is better? I’m sorry I don’t know.

I have both and it is difficult for me to interact on them. I do try but it is a habit I have yet to form. My problem is I just don’t know how to engage the readers or followers. What do they want to know? Should I ask them? I do share updates to my articles but I get bored of that so maybe they do too so why don’t they just ‘unfan‘ me. I don’t want people to fan me just to be nice and then block me from their timeline – what’s the point of that? That’s not engagement or community.

When I don’t know how to do something, I don’t pretend I do so I’m going to refer you to a couple of people who have great interactions on Google+ and Facebook.

  • Kawaii Crochet – very personable, shares her creative process, asks for input and consistently thanks her fans. She also shares customer photos of them wearing her products.
  • Bethintexas1 Crochet ClubBeth started out on Youtube showcasing her crochet and teaching others to crochet. Eventually it grew into this group and a blog. It is a very active community where people share their projects, ask for advice and participate in crochet a-longs.
  • Crochet Addict – Susan started out blogging and grew her fan base quickly by be nice and commenting on a number of blogs. Her membership is well over 7,000 now and growing. She is a kind soul and allows crochet to be free shared.
  • Crochet Geek – Teresa was the pioneer of teaching crochet on Youtube. She has a blog, a Facebook fan page and now a Google+ page.

Visit the ladies above to get an idea of what an active community looks like. What are the hot topics?

I'm not a “crochet” lady, but I have found that Facebook is just the only one I have time for in addition to Twitter…just not enough time in a day!

  3. @Dianne I use both for my blogs/article writing. I find I'm more active on Facebook and am looking forward to learning more about how I can interact on Google+.

  4. @DYI Blogging Services I understand – with so many social media platforms out there it's best to stick to what you can manage.
